Viotte Smart Building: a Data-Driven Approach to Building Management
Managing a modern building involves a wide range of systems, from building management and energy monitoring to elevators, IoT sensors, IRVE stations, occupancy and maintenance tools. When these data sources are managed through separate applications, obtaining a complete and consistent view of building performance can be complex. The Viotte Smart Building project, led by the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Region, aims to address this challenge through a more integrated and data-driven approach.
The Viotte building is a 6,390 m² regional demonstrator and European pilot site. In the center of the project is the DBA (Data Building Aggregator), designed to centralize data from the building’s different technical systems. By integrating data from multiple sources, the project aims to reduce the need to supervise building operations through multiple separate software solutions and provide facility and operational teams with a more comprehensive view for building management, monitoring and decision-making.
This centralized data approach supports several use cases: indoor comfort and air quality, space occupancy optimization, energy monitoring and optimization, predictive maintenance, smart maintenance, asset management and analysis of electric vehicle charging station usage.
Data from the Building Management System (BMS) and elevators can be combined with information collected by new multi-sensors to better understand equipment behaviour, detect anomalies and support maintenance decisions. More broadly, bringing together historical, technical rapports, real-time and contextual building data creates the foundation for advanced data analysis.
The project is led by the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Region, together with the service providers selected to implement the project. The University of Lille contributes expertise in robotics and crack identification, including awareness sessions and building diagnostics for selected regional sites. LIST contributes expertise in data analysis and artificial intelligence.
By creating a common data foundation instead of working with isolated building systems and customizing the dashboards, the Viotte Smart Building project aims to make building management simpler to operational teams, more proactive and more data-driven, while improving comfort, maintenance, energy performance and long-term asset management.
