Flanders Environment Agency

Flanders Environment Agency (VMM) is the official environmental agency of the Flemish Government, dedicated to creating a clean, healthy, and climate‑resilient environment in the Flanders region of Belgium. VMM works across water, air, and climate adaptation to monitor environmental conditions, guide policy, and support sustainable solutions that benefit both people and nature. Its mission includes ensuring clean water and air, steering climate adaptation efforts, and collaborating with stakeholders to tackle environmental challenges in a proactive way.

In the BEPROACT project, VMM plays a central role in advancing smart, data‑driven water infrastructure management. It leads pilots that use multiparameter sensors to collect continuous water quality data, enabling faster detection of issues like pollution events and ecological stressors, and supports smarter interventions. Through collaboration with partners including GEOSPARC and the University of Lille, VMM helps develop predictive tools and analytics that improve environmental monitoring and support more proactive asset management strategies across borders.
