From 2 to 4 July 2025, the 3rd International Symposium on Pavement Functional Design and Management (PFDM2025) took place at Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands.
The symposium offered a unique platform for researchers, policy makers, and industry experts to come together and engage in discussions on the functional requirements of pavements. These include aspects such as safe skid resistance, texture, adequate surface and subsurface drainage, riding quality, acceptable levels of tire-pavement noise, low rolling resistance, and emerging functionalities driven by cutting-edge technologies required by new mobility paradigms.
The event also served as an opportunity to gain insights into pavement technology trends across Europe, celebrate achievements in the field, and exchange best practices in pavement design, maintenance, and policy implementation. The BEPROACT project was represented by Rutger Krans (Rijkswaterstaat), Bernardo Mota Lontra (TNO), and Jan-Hinrik Borchers (BASt).
Rutger Krans delivered a welcome speech on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat, during which he briefly introduced the BEPROACT project en highlighted several international collaborations to the audience. Bernardo Mota Lontra contributed to the symposium with a presentation on Pavement Data and Pavement Performance Predictions.
Jan-Hinrik Borchers gave a presentation on incorporating Residual Service Life into network-level Pavement Management Systems for flexible pavements. This topic will also be published as a conference paper.
The presence of the BEPROACT project at PFDM2025 contributed to strengthening international connections and aligning research efforts in the field of data-driven pavement management.
